Today marks a historic moment as four lead applicant organizations THRDC, Wajibu, Haki Elimu and IMS, officially signed grant contracts under the European Union’s Strengthening CSOs as Independent Actors of Good Governance and Development in Tanzania.The signing ceremony has been held in the European union embassy premises here in Tanzania.
Fausta Msokwa, IMS Tanzania Manager, signed on behalf of Union of Tanzania Press Clubs (UTPC) and Jamii Africa, co-applicants for Lot 1 of the call for proposal. This is good news as IMS, Jamii Africa and UTPC, strengthening ethical, credible, and independent journalism in Tanzania
What will Lot 1 achieve?
1. Strengthen media professionalism– Promoting ethical, balanced, and high-quality journalism.
2. Train journalists & bloggers in safety, investigative & data journalism, election reporting, gender-sensitive coverage, and tackling misinformation.
3. Raise awareness on media laws, independence, and fundamental freedoms like Freedom of Expression (FoE) and Right to Information (RTI).
4. Combat hate speech, intolerance, and disinformation to foster responsible journalism and civic engagement.
According to Kenneth Simbaya, UTPC executive director, “This is more than just funding it’s a commitment to responsible journalism, credible news, transparency, and democracy, at a time when independent journalism faces increasing challenges, from professionalism, legal and social factors,”
This grant will significantly contribute to a Tanzania media landscape that upholds professionalism, diverse voices, and people centric.
